I love stained glass and always pop into churches and cathedrals on my travels to check out their windows – so this post was lovely to do. Alas lack of time this week meant being inventive – so I may revisit this subject matter later when I have time to sort out some of my lovely stained glass window photos. By the way – I have always wanted to know how to create stained glass – so I am intending to join an evening class to learn the craft. I’ll keep you posted on my progress!

The first photo is part of a collection I took of the beautiful Parish Church of St Giles & St Nicholas in Sidmouth – just a few minutes stroll from our home. If you’d like to see more photos of the outside or inside you can take a virtual photographic tour on my Sidmouth blog.

The remaining photographs I took last Saturday, when quite by chance I came across a wonderful collection of stained glass panels in the back room of an antique shop (any of you that know me well will know I spend simply hours rootling around antique shops or book shops!). The collection was in a small dusty room, yet the wonderful designs and colours shone out. I wished I’d had a reason to purchase one – but I could not think of a single place in our home where a stained glass panel would be justified. We have a grade 2 listed home so we do not have an option of replacing the original Georgian doors (or even panels in the windows) with stained glass. I may have to put my thinking cap on and be creative – these panels are so lovely! I may consider getting P to fit a panel into a wardrobe door in our bedroom.

  1. The glass is gorgeous!!! WOW! I really love the stuff you found in the back of the place too.

I couldn’t get inside the church to take a picture so I had to manipulate my photos to look like the sun was shining through them.

  2. beautiful stained glass windows

  3. Very pretty! I am always pulled to the stained glass windows at antique shops. I envision one hanging from the ceiling to separate my breakfast nook and sitting room but have yet to find the PERFECT one. (it just might be in one of the photos – you’ll have to take me!?)

NOw, I have to ask TallT how she manipulated her photos!!! (alas – I prob don’t have the right software… )

  4. Those are so pretty. I love stained glass too. I used to watch my cousin put some of her creations together, they were so neat. She made me a stained glass plaque with a unicorn on it for one of my birthday’s…I have no idea where it is at in all the moving around I did years ago. She also made my parents a windmill for Christmas one year…my mom had it stashed in her cedar chest so we didn’t bother getting it out.

I missed you this week…glad you are back!

  5. CuriousC-

I did it through Flickr… Upload your photo there, then click on the one you want. Click “edit photo” above the picture.

The Picnik logo will appear…Then you will be able to edit your photo.

I went to “exposure” and went lower, then I went to “colors” and added saturation (made it higher). Some of them I went higher on the “temperature” as well.

Let me know if it works for you!

  6. I love stained glass too. So lively yet serene.

  7. Oooh, love the pics, I only posted one, but have lots of them.

  8. Eiain,

Post some more – the one there already is stunning.

  10. Beautiful! I LOVE the stuff in the back the most. The stuff in basements and back rooms is often the most interesting!!!

  11. I definitely think you need to purchase one of those stained glass panels, do you know the history of any of them???? Buy now, figure it out later! How fun…I love antique shopping/garage sales, etc…

    Great photos!

  12. This is amazing stained glass work. Wouldn’t it be neat to own one? My SIL does glass work and so does my brother. But, there is something ever so interesting about religious stained glass panels to me. So beautiful!

  13. oh, btw, I tagged you, if you feel up to it :)
