If I was in Liverpool today, there would be only one place I would be: Tate Liverpool!

I’ve always been a fan of the Viennese painter Gustav Klimt and I would love to see his first ever comprehensive British exhibition, which is currently being held at Tate Liverpool. However, since I have other pressing commitments (earning a living with no holiday due) I guess I’ll have to make do with looking through the many books on Klimt that I have in my own personal library. Such is life!
Apparently, Tate Liverpool has borrowed works from every period of Klimt’s painting history for the exhibition – and it has attempted to place each piece in the context/setting of its time. Since his paintings were originally created to be displayed in the homes of his patrons at the time – this seems very apt. The homes have not been reconstructed – merely a few artifacts/ furniture/objects strategically placed to create a feel for the original setting.
I’m not going to waffle on about the richness of texture in his paintings, or the quality of depth and flatness in his work, or the stunning uses of colour, or the myriad of reasons for why I like his work – but if you can get there, go (and take some photos for me if they are allowed)! If you can’t go, watch Sky Arts at 9pm Tuesday for Tim Marlow on Klimt. If like me you can’t get to Liverpool and don’t have the Sky Arts channel – feel sorry for yourself, because you’re missing out on a treat. Where’s that chocolate ….. ?
