I have to admit that this assignment feels intriguing to me – I am rather hoping that the other entrants take photos through their own home windows – so I can imagine them in their own setting.

It’s always been important to me to be able to imagine friends and family in their setting. Whenever anyone I know move home, I like to visit ASAP so I “know” where they are! I feel this particularly strongly when my boys move, or another close member of my family. I’ll often take a photo of them in their new home – my husband says it is a fear of losing them, of not knowing where they are. Maybe he’s right. I’ve lost several very important people in my life – all have died through cancer – and it’s left me feeling vulnerable that someone can disappear forever, with hardly a warning.

For my own entry, I looked with a photographic eye out of every window in my own home, briefly considered taking a photo of the view from each, and then decided to settle on the view through a first floor french window in the drawing room, looking south over the balcony into the garden because it is such a pretty view. Just behind the trees is the sea – so in Winter when the leaves fall, there is a glimpse of the sea from the first floor rooms.

The rear of my home is south facing – so the balcony below, overlooking the garden, has the sun almost all day, despite the tall trees. For this reason I often sit there, coffee by my side, reading a book and admiring the view. It’s a wonderfully relaxing place to sit because you can actually hear the sea, and also the constant call of seagulls. I took the photo standing in the room itself (deliberately) – so you could literally look through the window with me.

View from my first floor study window, looking East towards the Jurassic cliffs seen in the header at the top of the blog page (taken through glass as this window doesn’t open). The sea is behind the trees to the right and laps up the beach towards the cliff.
