I’m not a beach person and my idea of a wonderful holiday is exploring (with a pile of books waiting to be read in my luxury hotel at the end of a day’s walking). These days, because I live on the coast in an area of outstanding natural beauty, I tend to particularly relish visiting cities. Nothing is nicer on a lovely warm day than wandering streets, ubiquitous camera in hand, taking photographs. Add to that my lifelong love of architecture and it’s not hard to tell what makes me happy on holiday.

That’s how I recently came across the stunning building below in Madrid. What’s fantastic about it for me, is that it’s just an ordinary building in an ordinary street. In other words, it’s not a museum, or gallery, or tourist attraction; it’s just a building used as a home or an office. People walk by, going about their business, and barely give it a cursory glance. They see it every day, so they don’t see it at all!

However, I was wowed by it; of course it is in the Art Nouveau style which I love. I searched for a plaque to tell me the architect’s name, but there wasn’t one to be found. Madrid is full of stunning architecture – and there are some real gems (as in Barcelona) by Gaudi and other talented and famous architects of renown. I did wonder if it could be a Gaudi creation.

So here it is, my Photo Friday: Amazing Architecture ( just an ordinary building in Madrid)

Next week’s Photo Friday title is: Photographic Art

PS: After I looked at Linda’s entry (Blahblahblog) and Tina’s (Sky Windows) I decided to add a lovely photo I took in San Francisco last time I was there – because it is so modern – and so stunning. This is the usual type of architectural photograph I love to take!
