I love taking black and white photographs. Many people ask, “why black and white when colours are so brilliant and colour images can be so seductive?” Well to me, that is a rhetorical question.
-
The way I see it is that black and white photography is the original form of this art so will always deserve a place in the pantheon of legitimate photographic art forms.
-
I love the simplicity and stark contrast that highlight the sharp focus of black and white photographs.
-
Black and white photographs last much longer- despite the claims for today’s colour printing. Surely, I can’t be the only photographer (albeit amateur) that wants my photgraphs to outlive me! I have some wonderful photos of my own great grandmother (who died many years before I was born) and they are as crisp and clear as the day they were printed.
-
Black and white photography is a wonderful way to capture beauty and stop time. There aren’t many of us who don’t look even better in black and white! Get someone to take a picture of you in black and white and you’ll see what I mean!
-
There is also an inherent dignity about black and white pictures that appeals to me.

Anyway, my own entry today is a black and white portrait of my beloved cat Henry (1985 – 2004).It is a snap (in that I just picked up the camera and snapped the picture) so there was no posing, no adjusting light etc. But somehow it just seemed to capture the magic of Henry for me. Sadly it is an old, much loved and worn, non digital photograph – so it didn’t take well to scanning and reducing in size. The original version is stunning in it’s clarity and detail. When I took it, he was sitting outside basking in the warmth of the sun, in the garden (he loved the sun on his back). he always closed his bright blue eyes in bright light (most Siamese do) – one of his nicknames was Harry blue eyes! Take a look, you can see every whisker, every individual tuft of downy soft fur on his dear little face in the photograph. I treasure it now; since now I do not have him with me in body (although always in spirit and in my heart).

Hi Julie,
Love the ice sculpture – all of the entries have been particularly brilliant this week – must be something to do with the creativity that black & white brings to photography.
Love the idea of silhoette as a future Photo Friday title too.

Beautiful photos of Henry! He looks loved and like he has the cat’s meow in that top photo. Black and White always makes things more real to me. Thanks for putting this together.
Mine is finally up now, I know, I hate being last every week…

Tina, (sky windows)
That is a beautiful photo you posted as your entry – in colour (or color as you lot over the pond spell it!) OR black and white.
Thanks for joining in – I think we all really enjoyed this week’s Photo Friday.

Your plan for this and next week sounds perfect! I need to wrack my brain on what artsy fartsy things I can put together!
I agree! I think we all really enjoyed this past Friday’s challenge.

“I love the simplicity and stark contrast that highlight the sharp focus of black and white photographs.” I totally agree with you on this statement. Coloured photographs cannot bring out that.
Keep up the good work!

I love Henry! He reminds me so much of my own siamese who I also lost in 2004. There is just nothing like them.

Tim, thanks for your comment.
Hi Shawna, thanks!
Siamese are very special cats aren’t they? We adored Henry and grieved for him when he died – but he had a good innings, living nearly 20 years. We still miss him though.

We only had our Siamese ten years before losing him to FIP. Rupert, or affectionately “Ooby”, was given to me by a friend as a gift for my mother. My uncle, her baby brother, had just died of cancer and my mother relied on our cat, “her comfort” as she grieved. Ooby died shortly after my mother also lost her younger sister in a tragic accident. Hardly a day goes by she doesn’t mention how much she misses him. I love to see the pictures of Henry and read of others who love these wonderful cats.

Shawna,
I’m sorry to hear your family has had so much tragedy in it. And I can most certainly understand why your siamese cat would be so missed – they have such wonderful personalities and become real members of the family.
