JOY!

The photo above is a snap I took of my beautiful adored grandson, when he came to stay for a weekend with me, in Winter.  He is four years old in the photo (five soon) and he just loves the sea and the sand – so even though it was winter, we wrapped up warm and headed down to the beach to build a sandcastle together.

He is at that age where the whole world is a wonder to him and he has that perfect childlike enthusiasm and energy for everything. He and his little sister (age 1 year) are an absolute joy to me. I have photographs of them everywhere and cannot look at their dear little faces without smiling.

PS: Have you noticed that my grandson is watching a swimmer in the sea? The water was icy cold as it was Winter! Can you believe the “madness” of it?

Next week’s Photo Friday title is: Friends.

  1. This brings back some wonderful childhood memories. I still have a picture of myself in a similar situation.

  2. We both picked children as our subject! Your grandson’s little blue boots (do you call them wellies?) are sooooo cute!

I didn’t think I’d be posting today, but mine’s up, with a departure from the usual format! :-)

  3. Looks like we all find joy in children. Very cool. My post can be found here:

  5. Leafless,

I too have photos of myself like this. I suppose that the simple things in childhood like building sandcastles on the beach, are so timeless and create such happy memories that we repeat them through the generations.

    Lou,

Yes we do call the little blue boots “wellies” (Wellington boots named after Lord Wellington who wore boots to the knee).

When Addison was tiny his parents were very over protective (they’d been told the chances of having a child were slim – and so wanted one) – so at first he wasn’t allowed to get mucky, and pick up germy feathers or shells on the beach.

Now they’ve relaxed into parenthood and I’m allowed to get him as mucky as I like on the beach – so it’s great fun! AS soon as he arrives – we pack the buckets and spades up, grab the wellies – and go get dirty! Such joy!

    Tina,

Your entry is very moving – I loved it. It is interesting we all translated the word joy in terms of children – it says so much, doesn’t it?

  6. I immediately noticed the swimmer. Then I read how it was winter and thought surely I was mistaken. I think your grandson had the right idea, playing on the SAND.

  7. Hi Stacey, too right!

On Decemebr 26th there is a boxing day swim in Sidmouth – and old and young alive dash into the water together. They compete against each other to see who can stay in the icy water the longest! The winner is the last one out!

So “mad” swimmers are not new to me!

  8. There is nothing like a child on the beach. I’m looking forward to playing with my nieces on the beach next weekend. ~DKM
