About my town – Sidmouth Folk Festival Week, 2007

Sidmouth holds an annual Folk Festival which takes place over the course of a week, when the whole of the town where I live is taken over by everything to do with folk music. There are musicians everywhere – all along the sea front promenade and in the streets – playing and singing. Workshops and sessions are held daily – along with social events and dances. There are programmed ticket only events –  and also many song and music events free in a variety of pubs, restaurants and bars.  There are all sorts of street dancers, morris dancers and even workshops where you can make your own wooden clogs (should you be so inclined!!!). Along the promenade there are a whole series of stalls selling hand-crafted jewelry, other “new age” goods and a whole range of cheese-cloth and tye-dye clothes: skirts, shirts and tops. (I remember those from the seventies!!)

Although very much a music lover, folk music is not my favourite type of sound – but having said that I love to see the dancers and hear the street musicians – and generally take in the wonderful lively atmosphere that the festival brings to our town. I just hope the weather stays fine for them all.

This morning I strolled around the town and snapped a few photos to show you – the weather was cool:

I was not sure where the lady below was hurrying to,  in her traditional costume:

This afternoon the sun came out and I couldn’t resist another stroll around – since there is always much more happening in the sunshine.

I also couldn’t resist a photo of the juggling gear!

The musician below travels everywhere with his cat called Pinky (who is 9 years old). They go all over Europe together performing. Pinky was adorable and loves to be stroked – apparently he never scratches anyone – which is just as well because all the passing children stroked him!

the cat was the star of the show!

The young man below was playing the electric guitar wonderfully – it was incredible to listen to. I stayed here for some while, enchanted by the sound he produced.

cool music

The day became hotter and hotter – fortunately there was a lovely cooling sea-breeze – as you can see by the wind-socks blowing.

busy, busy, busy!

This group were real professionals – and have several CD’s out. They were slick and good.

Mummers dancing (an old English tradition)

The music the Mummers produced was haunting – it seemed to tap into some primal instinct and draw you in. They were fantastic to listen to and entertaining to watch.

Do you recall the lady hurrying this morning? I stumbled across her again this afternoon – she is part of a traditional Welsh dancing team. I just love the photo below - I snapped it casually as I walked past.

Tonight live music locally with a long cool drink! Life in the slow lane can be great!

  1. Lot’s of nice scenery where you are, Jan. Pretty bland by comparison in my digs. We have a similar week-long event every year on Main Street called “Sidewalk Days” where everyone moves their wares out onto the street. The music and stuff is for later in the evening, when everyone gets drunk and disorderly, and trashes all of the flower boxes along the medium. This year was especially bad.

North Americans can be morons, as our foreign policy shows!

  2. Hex, Maybe next time there is a “Sidewalk Days” you could snap a few photos? I love to see what’s going on around the world – especially ordinary day to day life etc.

  3. Man, I must of been drunk when I wrote that last comment! That should have read ‘median’ not medium! You’ll be thinking we’re all witches, here!

It’s usually a pretty benign affair. They close off the “main drag” as we refer to Main Street, and then the shops move everything out into the street. There are bands and beer gardens as well, and that’s usually where the trouble starts late at night and into the wee hours. This year, all of the idiots came together en masse and wrecked a lot of stuff after getting a snoot-full!

That’s how we do things in the ‘wild west’ girl!

  4. Hi Jan
thanks for putting your photos up – they really convey the happy atmosphere of Sidmouth’s folk week much better than many efforts in the press – they often seem to stress the weird and outrageous side of Folk Week at the expense of “ordinary” people enjoying the music they love in a wonderful relaxed atmosphere!
These pictures are just the sort of publicity we need – Pity you didn’t go to the Anchor Garden Sunday Afternoon You would have seen Sidmouth’s own Traditional Mummers Performing the Town’s Christmas Mumming play, I think You would have enjoyed it.
Keep up the good Work Best Wishes.
Henry Piper, (Old Father Christmas) Sidmouth Mummers.

  5. Henry, I’m glad you liked the photos – I certainly have enjoyed the festival so far. I would have loved to have seen the mumming play – maybe next time.

Please feel free to use any of these photographs (free) to promote the festival or to put on the Mummer’s website – providing you mention my name as the photographer! Jan Marshall (Sidmouth resident and Author)

  6. I’m the lady with the suitcase in Welsh costume! It was hard work being in the right place at the right time with two teenage boys and a dog in tow! You certainly captured the spirit of the festival – next year I think I’ll return as a spectator, as we did not get time to appreciate all the other performers.

  7. Linda, how lovely you spotted my photo of you – thank you for posting. I’m glad you liked the photos. I really enjoyed the festival – so thanks to all who took part and arranged it.

  8. I love your photo of Pinky the cat. We stayed in Sidmouth for the whole week and saw him/her several times but never managed to get a photo. Great to see yours. Brings it all back. Have already booked for next year.

  9. Hi Ann, Pinky is gorgeous isn’t he? But then I just love cats! I’m glad to hear you’re coming back – the folk festival is always a pleasure.
