A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
Alex Perkic (1974 -2007)
When I read the news in an e-mail that Alex had died, it hit me like a sledgehammer – so great was the impact that this fine young man had on me, during the short time I have known him. It is even more remarkable when you consider that we never actually met. He was a member of the Chondrosarcoma Support Group – and although we regularly e-mailed each other via the site and sometimes offline – we had a “virtual” friendship.
Alex had a remarkable personality – it shone through the very words he typed on the chondrosarcoma support group site. You didn’t need to meet him to know that you were in the presence of a man of integrity – a man who was willing and able to admit he was less than perfect (I listened to the recording of his church sermon) – a man who trusted unequivocally in God – and knew with an absolute certainty that he was part of God’s plan; a man who loved and adored his Mom and family, and his beautiful wife and children, and would have laid his life down for any one of them, had it ever become necessary. You didn’t need to sit eyeball to eyeball with Alex to see the hard earned pride he had for his wonderful career in television, and to hear the sheer joy he experienced when he achieved his dream job – because, like I said, it shone out of the page he typed on, it shone from his very being.
Oh Alex, you will be missed by many - far closer and greater than me. I fear for their pain, because as I write through my tears, feeling so miserable at your loss, I can only glimpse at their grief. Thank you for touching my life. I will never forget you. You are a man for all seasons.

Thank you for the tribute to Alex. I met him on several occasions and was amazed at his passion for life and his family and his work. A good man – he is missed but will always be remembered.

Thanks for the tribute for my buddy. He was as an amazing guy with a great knack for disarming you. I’d known him since 7th grade and we clung together like 7th grade dorks do. I’ll miss him and they way he proclaimed Christ until the last minute of his life.

Janine to me, Jan to others…
Wow! I burst into tears when I started to read your post. You had me at, “It hit me like a sledgehammer.” He died a little over a month ago, on June 23, 2007. I am still in shock. I walk around our home and think, “Alex sat here.” or, “Alex suffered so much here.” Or, “Alex’s children will never really get to witness what a magnificent man he was.”
I thank you, my good cyber buddy, for writing a beautiful piece befitting my beautiful son.
Stay a NERD, Janine, as I need you on the CS board!
Love,
Gretchen

Gretchen, I’m glad you thought that it was a piece of writing befitting your son – but the title says it all: “The blog I never wanted to have to write.”
Re Alex & Amy’s children – in a strange way the children will witness just how magnificent their father was/is because I think you’ll be amazed to find as they grow, that their genetic inheritance will come out; they will witness just how wonderful a man their father is first hand.
You will spot it in their mannerisms, the way they look at you and respond, the things they say and do, possibly even their tone of voice, their attitude; many things about them you could not even begin to imagine right now.
And when the time comes you will be puzzled – you won’t understand how they can have turned out so like their beloved dad when a cruel illness robbed them of him so long ago. When this happens it is incredibly sad (because a turn of the head, a nuance of voice will remind you of how you continually miss Alex) and yet it will also be unbelievably joyeous (because you will know, without a shadow of doubt, that your son is present there in his offspring – he lives on in their genetics) and that will be worth celebrating.
You will find you want to hug those grandchildren even more – for their own sakes – but also just because …..
Love, Janine

[...] I was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma (a rare primary bone cancer) in 1995 and survived it. I am still a NERD (no evidence of recurring disease). As UK co-moderator of the Chondrosarcoma Support GroupI am only too aware that not everyone is so lucky. In the past few weeks we have lost three very special and valiant Chondrosarcoma warriors – who lost their brave battles against this terrible disease and today would have been the birthday of Alex Perkic .
